10 Great Inspiring Quotes by Steve Jobs

"Steve Jobs, the iconic leader of Apple, has logged out", proclaimed the headlines on almost all news portals and newspapers, the world over, despite more pressing events like Hurricane Irene, the issues in Libya and Syria, and even our very own 'War against Corruption', here in India. Such has been the influence of this individual in his long and illustrious career that he is undoubtedly an 'iCon' to many.

From the early years, he has always demonstrated his ability to 'Think different', and this has probably been a source of inspiration to many in the world, who are fans and followers of not only the Apple brand, but the current generation that has taken a huge following of the hugely successful and truly disruptive influences of this age - iTunes, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad!

Steve Jobs has provided inspiration in almost everything he has said and done. Here is a listing of what I found as his most inspirational quotes (and more):

1. Steve Jobs' 2005 Commencement Address at Stanford University: “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” (Watch this great video here)

2. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And, the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

3. “No one wants to die. And, yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It is life's change agent.”

4. “Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works. The design of the Mac wasn’t what it looked like, although that was part of it. Primarily, it was how it worked. To design something really well, you have to get it. You have to really grok what it’s all about. It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something, chew it up, not just quickly swallow it. Most people don’t take the time to do that...”

5. “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me.”

6. “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”

7. “When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something."

8. “I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.”

9. “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.”

10. There's many more, but I think, even his style of resignation stands out: “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come...” - Jobs, August 25, 2011.

The Best National Anthem in the World

Happy 65th Independence Day, India - and it's billion-plus folks. How things have changed in these six and a half decades... It is indeed interesting, that the attention in the world is once again shifting to this booming economy, and we have Google (with it's trademark doodle) paying tribute to this nation and it's well being on this important milestone. Just as in the era gone by, India may be becoming the center of attraction - what with a newer globalized planet. Indians sure would be proud of what's been achieved in these years, while at the same time hoping that the long-waging battle against corruption and terror be won soon.

Things have changed for all of us, no matter which demographic you may belong to. But, if there's one thing that hasn't - or, well, is different? - is the sound, the melody and the awe of our national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. We've all learnt this, and our children continue to adore this masterpiece. However, this week has seen a new development - the discovery of the "missing" stanzas of this beautiful compositon by Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Here's a look at the complete song, hitherto unknown, and like the previous masterpiece of 'Mile Sur', is performed by the legends of Indian music:

Jaya he, Jaya he, Jaya he!

Friends2Support.com - A site for Indian Blood Donors

Friends2Support.com is an initiative by a group of Indians, to bring together those in need to blood, when the need arises. One wishes, that no one be faced with such dire situations, but, as a fact of life, there are thousands who are faced with situations that require help in those kinds of circumstances. F2S's mission is 'to make the best use of contemporary technologies in delivering a promising web portal to bring together all the blood donors in India; thereby fulfilling every blood request in the country.'

The portal is a place where blood donors can volunteer to register themselves. For others, they can hope to find volunteer donors, if they have to. One can search by a variety of options that include: blood group, state, city and district.

We hope this initiative thrives, and we wish the team the very best in this endeavor.

DevgadMango.com - Bringing the best to you!

It's that time of the year again: the summer's are getting hotter (and unbearable), school's are closed and kids are loving the vacations. And, of course, there's one more thing that's awaited: 'tis the start of the mango season! Yum!

Who can forget the taste of the mango fruit. While there are a number of varieties of mangoes, there's only one that's aptly called the 'King of Mangoes', and that is, the Aphonso. Tasty, delicious, fragrant,... there's a score of adjectives that mango lovers will find to describe this.

Sadly, this year, the mango crop has been affected by bad weather in the beginning of the year, a crucial time for the flowering of the mango trees. So, stocks have been in short supply, but there's some hope that the next lot will be able to quench the mango lovers' appetite, at least to an extent.

Meanwhile, the 'Devgad Taluka Aamba Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit' - have launched an initiative DevgadMango.com. This is an initiative by the growers, direct, to bring these quality mangoes to the consumer. It's meant to help the consumer get the authentic devgad hapus. We do hope that the initiative is a success, and hope that we get these delicious mangoes for many more generations to come.

Long live the 'King of mangoes; Hip, hip, Hapus'!

A Letter to Our 'Uncle Anant Pai'

Today, (Feb 24, 2011) marks a solemn moment, as the newspaper declared the passing away of Uncle 'Anant' Pai. The name is familiar to millions of Indians the world over. As children, many (like me) have grown up reading, understanding and appreciating stories, morals, values of characters that are etched in our minds to this day.

Krishna, Rama, Mahabharat, ... Akbar-Birbal, Champak, Tinkle ... Supandi, Shambhu Shikari... are all still fresh in our minds, even as many of us now read or narrate these to our little ones. The man behind 'Amar Chitra Katha' the Indian comic movement, Anant Pai, was like a friend; the Tinkle issues used to have a section which invited readers to write to 'Uncle Pai', and many of us had probably even written. We may never know, whether our letters were read, but it was indeed a pleasure to receive a reply signed 'Uncle Pai', then on.

Known as the 'Father of Indian Comic Books', Anant Pai has left behind a legacy, that will continue as long as we believe in reading stories that define our values for life. These days, children have innumerable options, and Disney and Pixar may have invaded our living rooms. But, a visit to a good (kids) bookstore, is not likely to end, without so much as a glance (if not a perusal) of the colourful, lined Amar Chitra Katha volumes.

From the comments on news posts that report this sad story, it's understood, that we all will miss Uncle, and as with many of them who have posted, at least I think I'll continue buying Amar Chitra Katha volumes for my kids, to do my bit for keeping this legacy alive.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 - Follow the Action!

19-Feb-2011:

It's always nice to catch Google Doodles, and today was another of those days. With my browser open to its default home page, Google welcomed you to this day, when the biggest sporting event of the planet kicks off: The ICC Cricket World Cup, 2011.

(For a slick world cup schedule - and much more, click the schedule [image] below)

Cricket is no doubt the top sport in India, and probably on the planet, what with a nation of 1 billion following it like crazy. This mega event, that will be co-hosted by a total of 3 neighbouring nations (India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka), will see 14 countries compete against each other over the next 42 days to determine the world champions. India last won the World Cup in 1983, and are seen as a strong contender this time, but cricket, as experts will always say, is a game of uncertainties; there are no guarantees.

Here's wishing all the best to everyone. May the best team win!

Goodbye 2010, Welcome 2011!

01-Jan-2011
Along with the world that welcomed the New Year, we had Google which did it's part with a doodle to match! The date is in itself quite a thing to ponder about: write it as 1/1/11 and it's unique in itself. But, while that's distinct, this year will see a few more occasions that we'll see the one-alls date occurring at least a few more times this year. The most interesting will be 11-11-11! Obviously, this will be a great year for our numerologists, who will be busy predicting the good, and not-so-good behind what these once in a century combinations may augur.

Anyways. With 2010 behind us, (yeah, there was 10-10-10 that year!), here's a list of what made some of the news in all of 2010:

1. Welcome 2011: Celebrations from across the globe
2. TIME Magazine's Picks: A Photo essay
3. CNN: The Most Significant Gadgets of 2010
4. Yahoo!: Top Stories of 2010, month-by-month
5. Video: Head-turning Moments of 2010
6. Video: Inspiring Images of 2010
